Easy Access Controls

Three-Way Switch

How It Works
A lot of work has gone into creating an iPod shuffle that not only talks, but says the right things. It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod. iTunes reads your song information, then uses the new VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists, and playlists on your iPod shuffle. You’ll hear different voices depending on what type of computer system you use when you sync your iPod shuffle. If you sync it with a PC or with a Mac running Mac OS X Tiger, you’ll hear the English voice included in the VoiceOver Kit. Multiple Languages
Your music library may have songs from all over the world–a love song from France, a bolero from Spain, a pop tune from Japan. Luckily, VoiceOver speaks in 14 languages. iTunes automatically selects the language and best voice for your song titles and artist names. It looks at song data, like the title, artist, and album information, then applies intelligent algorithms to choose the right language. For example, iTunes recognizes the song “Ya Viene el Sol” by Ozomatli as a Spanish song, so your iPod shuffle will automatically speak that song title and artist name in Spanish. If you’d prefer to hear song titles and artist names spoken in a specific language, you can change the designated VoiceOver language in iTunes. My first one broke after 4 uses. Returned and replaced, the next one broke after two uses. Returned and replaced, the third broke after one use. That’s three broken Ipods in 6 weeks. A quick search shows they advertise this new shuffle for exercise, yet if you sweat, the item croaks. How is this company still in business?

1 Star Useless – Apple admits u can’t use this when working out
Apples is dragging their feet on this.

Anyone who works out or goes out on a hot summer day beware.

Sweat (that salty water) can run down the ear bud cable into the control buttons and renders the shuffle useless.

They will offer to replace the ear buds but demand a full refund – it will happen again

If you only want music with no video, this is great. The controls take a bit getting used to, but once you have them down, it’s easy to use. Great for the gym.

1 Star Sad attempt to retain market share
It’s not like Apple has a lot to worry about in the iPod shuffle market — until now. This new “requirement” on using Apple headphones in my opinion is a sad attempt to ensure people other than the owner see the signature white headphones which in most cases identifies an Apple iPod owner. I’d love to see the statistics behind such a decision. I mean Apple defines consumer usability, right? I own nearly every category of Apple product produced, for a reason — they’re awesome!

It is good to see other 3rd-party vendors getting into the game to provide aftermarket headphones with controller function, but it’ll be hard to get it right for all consumers. I wear my current shuffle’s headphones inside my shirt so that it doesn’t interfere with workouts so the idea of a controller in there isn’t so appealing.

I do realize that fans of Apple products aren’t necessarily what drives new innovation — those of us in that category will most likely continue to buy pretty much whatever Apple makes.

But, in my opinion such a change does three things:

1) It offers consumers an opportunity to check out other vendors’ products, not just new headphones

2) It adds to the total cost of ownership for your “valued” consumer

3) It “feels restrictive” to those used to seeing Apple move opposite other firms producing proprietary products

If I had to guess, I’d say Apple would add back the controller function to the next generation shuffles. I knew it bothered me, but to actually see the same complaints all over place… A lot of folks are upset with this. I hope to pick up the “revamped” next gen (with controller function on the player).

2 Stars Listen to the Other Reviewers, Read this if you workout!!!!!
I’ve had my shuffle for about 5 months and after the first couple of months of ownership, I had considered writing a positive review to offset some of the negative comments. My initial experience was positive and I was very happy with the product. I read all the negative comments and thought there is a problem with the earbud controls but I also thought it was limited and could be somewhat controlled. I am a runner and will run anywhere from 3 to 5 miles in a session. I really do like the new earbud control primarily because you can change volume or songs without breaking a stride and without looking at the iPod. I have also made an effort to keep perspiration away from the earbud controls but there is only so much you can do – especially in the hot, California sun. Well, about a month ago my earbud controller stop working and the volume was fixed at one level – a level that was a little on the loud side for me. After letting it dry it seemed to work but halfway through the run, I experienced the same problem. Now my shuffle is permanently set at the one volume level. While this isn’t has bad as what some of the other customers’ have experienced, it does validate what all the other reviewers are describing. If you workout with the new shuffle and perspire, you risk damaging the earbud which has about a $30 replacement cost. There has been several reviews that have discussed this problem but I want to add my comments since I am extremely dissapointed with the design. I am still a fan of the earbud design but Apple needs to fix it or put a large warning on the product.

5 Stars The New Jewelry for the New Century
Like a brooch of another century, my Apple shuffles decorate my lapels, collars, and necks of tees most everywhere I go. The jewel colors of the newer ones are attractive and cheerful on any outfit. With the sturdy clip feature, the Apple shuffle can even hide beneath my clothing when wearing it on the outside is inappropriate. I like Apple shuffles because they hold just the right amount for a long walk, interminable times in a waiting room or a quick research visit to the library. Whenever I get a song stuck in my head, the Apple shuffle loads it easily and plays it in my ears until I have become satiated with the annoyance and it disappears. Not very happy with my Shuffle purchase. The Shuffle stopped working after 2 months, pretty frustrating. The headphones are fine but the battery won’t hold a charge. Have had a few other iPods with good experience but not this time.

I love this little iPod. It’s so small I can put it anywhere. I do have a problem getting any headphones to stay connected to it though. I have to hold them in or I keep getting interrupted music. I thought it was only the original ones that came with it but the second pair I bought are doing the same thing.

I know everyone has been benefitting form the convenience and ease of these little shuffles for years now but I just joined the club and I love it. What is there to say about the iPod shuffle that hasn’t already been said in the other 300+ reviews?

So here are the five things *I* like best about it:

It’s small and lightweight and goes right into my shirt pocket.

It’s inexpensive so if i lose or break it or if it is stolen no big deal.

I can use the controls without looking at it.

It holds just the right amount of music.

Sand doesn’t mess it up at the beach.

The charge lasts a long time.

Okay, so that’s six.

Anyway, I’ve had my shuffle for 2 1/2 years and I still love it.

I had an older iPod for years and have a library of 100′S songs. It’s fun to be able to pick out my current favs and put just those on the shuffle. My shuffle reflects my “music mood” now and I just change the shuffles library to reflect what type of workout I want to do.

5 Stars Perfect for those who like it simple
All I wanted was an iPod that I could listen to while taking a walk or riding the subway to and from work. I didn’t need a screen that would list the songs I downloaded. I didn’t need video; I’ve never needed images to enjoy music. I certainly didn’t need more than this Shuffle’s capacity. And I wasn’t looking to impress anyone by pulling something super-expensive and eye-catching out of my pocket. So…the tiny iPod Shuffle is perfect for me. It easy to use, has good sound, and the controls are so easy and manageable that I don’t have to pull it out of my pocket to use them. Of course, not everyone is going to feel that no-frills is the way to go. But if you do like it simple, prefer Apple products, and either don’t want to or can’t spend a lot of money, I believe you’ll be happy with the Shuffle.

5 Stars Bulk-less music on the go.
This iPod Shuffle is my second iPod so there were no surprises in the box.

With my massive 160GB iPod Classic I bring all my music with me everywhere I go. I listen to it all day everyday at work. Yesterday I was grooving to Reggae while snowblowing the driveway. Sometimes the iPod Classic is too big and kind of in the way. The iPod Shuffle is the perfect answer to this “little” problem. Though limited by the 1GB size, I can fill it and empty and refill it at will. I find the small size ideal for the Gym. Low profile and light weight design makes it ideal to clip to my tshirt for lifting or cardio. Never in the way but always present – this thing rocks (and reggae’s too).

I picked the green color and was happy to find the color depicted on Amazon.com to be right on the money. Speaking of money, I found this Shuffle cheaper here online than advertised at my local bigbox exectronics stores. For those of you who seek instant gratification; My Shuffle showed up at my house so quickly, it’s hardly worth the trip to the mall. 2 days.

I bought a Soundfly SD WMA/MP3 Player Car Fm Transmitter two weeks ago and was so pleased with this unit I purchased a second one for in house use.

This unit sounds great on my home intertainment sytem as well (I built a 12v powersuply for in house use). This item is well worth the price, in fact I would have paid a lot more for something of this quality and and performance.

I have been limiting storage to 2GB SD chips, as 40 to 50 hours of music or audio books seems enough to keep track of on a single chip.

5 Stars Strong Signal, Flexible Device
After giving up on Sirius, I wanted to play some MP3s in my truck. I was leaning towards an iPod, and was thinking about an FM transmitter. When I found the Soundfly SD WMA/MP3 Player Car FM Transmitter it looked too good to be true. The cost was low and the unit gave me the basic features that I wanted from an iPod (simple playback or a group of songs with shuffle).

I purchased one from Amazon and received it quickly. I found the transmitter to be quite strong, more so than the transmitter in my Sirius radio. The playback quality was good. The included remote provides easy access to playback functions, although it is sometimes picky about the aim of the remote to the radio.

I use it with a couple of 2GB USB Flash Drives, and a couple of 2GB SD cards. I have not used it to transmit sound from an external audio source such as an iPod, as I have not acquired one after using the Soundfly.

The RDS display features works fine in my wife’s vehicle, but my truck radio does not have RDS support.

I am very happy with my purchase.

Good construction, small size, excellent reception/ transmission. You don’t have a mp3 player in your car? No problem! Put your selection on a USB drive, stick it in this little transmitter and you just transformed your car radio into a mp3 player. You even have a remote control! Very happy with this purchase. I don’t have time to read, I just download audiobooks and listen to them every day during my commute. What a great deal!

4 Stars Works Fine for me
I drive a pretty ghetto truck so I was concerned that maybe this device wouldn’t work, but I had absolutely no problems. It literally took me less than 5-minutes to set it up. I use it with my 3rd generation i-pod nano. My only complaint is that the volume’s a tiny bit low, but I’ve only tried one frequency so far so it may help to try others. I had no static like others were saying and like I said I drive an old very conservative vehicle, I don’t even get as many radio stations as everyone else I know in the area does.

5 Stars Soundfly FM transmitter
I bougth this unit and used it for two months. I was very satisfied with it but I lost it. I had to buy the cheaper version Pro Ebiz Sd/mmc/usb/mp3 which I am using now. This is how they compare

The Soundfly is a better looking product but it is, of course, more expensive.

Sound was comparable. Good quality on both. Both of them present a little bit of noise every now and then. The EBiz more that the Soundfly. Not enough to be annoying.

The small screen in the Ebiz shows more information including the song name. The Soundfly screen is very limited. This feature is irrelevant to me because I can not see the screen due to the location of the plug in my car.

I have used USB memory stick and the plug in input for a MP3 player on both and it worked correctly.

Both of them have remotes but the Soundfly has more functionality. Being able to advanced through folders is a BIG PLUS for the Soundfly. Ebiz can only advance one song at a time.

The stereo input for MP3 players has a non-standard plug in the Ebiz. It comes with a 6 inch cable that is so short that makes it annoying. The soundfly has a standard plug and a longer cable. Another BIG PLUS for the soundfly.

My car is a Kia Optima. The gear lever is very close to the 12V plug. Both of them fit because they have and adjustable neck. It is very tight though.

I was satisfied with the sondfly and am satisfied with the Ebiz. Soundfly is a better looking unit with several extra features and better quality. You pay for the extras.

2 Stars convenient, but poor sound
I first tried this in a friends car, and it seemed perfect – really easy to plug in, and it appeared to sound good. My own howerver was never able to produce sound that would be bearable to listen. I thought the problem is with where my lighter is relative to my radio, or kind of radio (after all this is my 5th radio adapter, and only two had decent sound), but after I gave up and bought a cassette adapter to plug in to phone jack (which this device does have), I found that even wired sound coming out is pretty crappy compared to same wire plugged into the iphone itself.

I still like the convenince of simply plugging it in, but when I lose or burn this one I am definitely looking elsewhere.

4 Stars Best way to listen to your iPod in your car
I had tried a few different things to play my iPod in my car. This is by far the best I’ve found. Not only can you listen to your iPod, it charges it as you play so it never dies while you’re listening to it. You simply tune your radio to whichever station the Belkin transmitter suggests and then you can listen to your music clearly right through your radio! I would definitely reccommend this over any other iPod car players (such as iTrip etc). I had one problem with it since I’ve had it for 6 months. The digital screen starting having issues where I couldn’t read all the numbers, but once I uplugged it and plugged it back in, it’s been fine ever since.

4 Stars First role: dock, second: FM transmitter
First the bad news. The FM transmission stereo signal is very modest. Clearscan doesn’t help a lot. That’s why I use it in Mono mode all the time – I lose the stereo effects, but the reception gets a lot better. So, if you want high-quality sound radiowaves is not the way.

Second, the good news. This stand works perfectly as a flexible charging dock for your iPod. While waiting in the traffic, I use the iPhone to browse through news, facebook, mails, sms, etc.

Third, the bonus news. Even though specs say iPhone is not supported, it actually works just like every iPod.

2 Stars Worked great… major drawback though!
I thought that this gave me the best signal of all FM Transmitters that I have tried out. It was absolutely perfect, and I work in the NYC Metro area. Unfortunately, it fried my iPhone and burnt out the connectors. Luckily, Apple was awesome about the whole situation and gave me a replacement at no charge, but they said that they would do it “only once”.

I loved the thing… just be careful before following the advice of others that may tell you to just “ignore the window that says ‘This accessory is not made to wirk with the iPhone”. I could have learned the hard way.

Other than that, if you have a regular iPod, get this one! Be wary with iPhone. For your reference, I was using an iPhone 3Gs.

4 Stars My Tunebase – 4 out of 5 Stars
I purchased this unit to use with my Iphone. I used two other types of FM transmitters. Both were plug in types that worked ok. However, my vehicle, a Lexus RX400h interior does not have a handy spot to place my phone & dangling FM module or the plug in port types. The plug in unit did have a mini usb socket to provide power but does not charge my iphone. On long commutes (2 hrs) my phone battery would lose 1/4 to 1/3 of its charge. The AAA battery operated xmiter (miniplug to the earphone port on the phone) would occassionally exhaust the batteries if I forgot to recharge them, and of course, the iphone battery would be drawn down – a pain when traveling and those 110v outlets are not always handy while waiting for my flight.

So, fast forward to the Tunebase. Pluses are that it charges my iphone quickly, allows my phone to operate with the blue tooth phone pickup in my RX400h, keeps a very nice place to hold my iphone securely and facing me (and not sliding off the seat onto the floor or taking up space in the cupholder alongside my coffee), avoids dealing with plugging and unplugging wires or cords or remembering to have freshly recharged batteries in the FM xmitter. The steel goose neck is stiff to hold my iphone in any angle I want. The tunebase control panel has a swivil on back that allows the phone to rotate 90deg if you want.

I like the 2 presets. The scan feature does find the open frequency, but sometimes, the airwaves are so congested, that open spot is overwhelmed 2 minutes later. So I have to manually hunt for an open frequency. Its not the fault of the tunebase as much as too many stations filling up the band that use to be vacant at the low and upper ends.

This unit is very convenient for me and I use it just about every time I get in my car. Audilble books and podcasts are what I listen to most of the time.

Previous posts have covered assembly of the unit. The cigarette lighter plug fits very snuggly. I pulled it out once without pushing down on the plastic console around the lighter socket and the tight fitting Tunebase plug pulled my console the face plate out. Fortunately the console faceplate popped back in place with no harm done. The Tunebase plug end has a gasket that forms a very tight fit, so be aware of that.

The FM transmitter is probably regulated by the FCC as to signal strength so works pretty much as effectively as the other plug in units I have. Its advantage is its engineered to make using your ipod or iphone easy and you can quickly change frequencies while you’re stopped at a traffic light. If your vehicle has its cigarette lighter socket in a place that can accomodate a Tunebase, you will love this thing. Unfortunately, I left my garage door up 6′-8″ the other night and some slimy thief got in, ransacked my car and stole two things, one was a digital camera and the other was my Tunebase. 3 Stars Great physical design; horrible sound quality
The physical design of the device is wonderful. All components feel solid, and seem to be made from quality materials. User interface is excellent.

The transmission power is definitely sub-par. Sound quality is patchy even when the frequency is nowhere near anything that’s in use. I don’t know how the transmission power compares to other comparable units, but I once drove by an SUV that completely overwhelmed my transmission, and I got listen to about 5 seconds of a kids’ movie instead of my music.

The device is completely unusable in “stereo” mode in major metropolitan areas that have a lot of radio stations, such as Chicago.

Griffin Road Trip FM Transmitter. Very easy to use and makes very simple to play and see your I-Pod. Plugs into outlet plug and adjusts so you can see frequencies to tune your radio. Holds I-Pod safe and secure. I have one for my car and one for my truck.

This is a very good product for the money. It works great on the higher frequency stations. I bought this for my i-pod Touch and I have had FM transmitters before and this one outdoes them all.

5 Stars Works Well
I’ve seen this device listed for $100 in a few places and to get it for $15 was quite a steal. I am not sure if it’s worth the $100 that a lot of places will charge for it, but I have been very impressed with it. It’s pretty simple, if you live in a big city with a lot of radio frequencies, you’re going to get static with this device. Otherwise, it works great. It’s probably just as good or better than any of the other FM transmitters out there, plus it charges your iPod and is flexible to fit several different car models.

5 Stars How to improve audio quality
Bought this 7/09. Very secure in the outlet. Sturdy gooseneck. With my iPhone I can now listen to internet radio on the road via Slacker or Pandora apps. Love it!

But, as noted by Michael Paradis in an earlier review, you must do this:

“On the FM transmitter box, push the middle button (Function) and then press and hold the “Mode” button (the right one) for approximately 10 seconds. When you let go you will see a menu for “Us” “Eu” “Ja”, select the middle button, “Eu”. Let the device sit for a few seconds until it goes back to the main screen, then tune your radio and the transmitter to 87.7 – 87.9!”

Just tried this tip and it works wonderfully. No more hiss or static while listening.

4 Stars Works as described. No problem at all.
Just took it on a 6 1/2 hour journey and had no problem at all. I had to occasionally use the scan function to get a new station as we traveled. Interface was easy to use (after reading the instructions a bit). Seems like a good solution for a car without an adapter or jack.

5 Stars Not Compatible with iPhone, but still works well
The Griffin 4045-TRPAUTOS iTrip Auto FM Transmitter with SmartScan for iPod was a great buy for me. I didn’t want to spend over 50 dollars on a FM Transmitter and a car charger, so I went with this. I was concerned when I plugged in the adapter to my iPhone and the phone complained about the accessory not being compatible. I quickly tapped “No” when asked to put the phone in airplane mode, and tuned my car and iTrip to the same station. The audio quality seems on-par with the other iTrip I had, but the added convenience of a charger was the real decider.

Without getting too lenghty (I hope I haven’t) here are some highlights from this product:

1) Easy to use, Plug in and go

2) simple station setting + 3 Presets

3) does work with iPhone 3G and 3GS (Not Sure about the original)

4) Amazon got it to me very quickly (and for free too!)

1 Star Did not work for my iPod 4g
I received this as a gift along with my iPod last month. The one thing is seemed to be able to do was charge the iPod in the car. When we first plugged it in, there was a brief moment of music from the iPod, and upon pulling out of the driveway, it never worked again. We tried it in town, on the Interstate, and in different towns, with lots of different setting combinations and lots of frustration. It was returned for a refund, and a different model of the Griffin iTrip worked great.

The signal is not strong enough to be useful. I tried many frequencies. The feature set is very good, if it worked.

4 Stars Works quite well
There’s no way around it, FM transmitters suck. But this one works pretty well. The display is bright and readable, the charger works nicely. And most importantly, the cable is pretty good at filtering out GSM chatter even if you ignore the iPhone’s warning to go to airplane mode. The only minor complaint I had is the UI for re-scanning and changing channels is a bit awkward.

Like a brooch of another century, my Apple shuffles decorate my lapels, collars, and necks of tees most everywhere I go. The jewel colors of the newer ones are attractive and cheerful on any outfit. With the sturdy clip feature, the Apple shuffle can even hide beneath my clothing when wearing it on the outside is inappropriate. I like Apple shuffles because they hold just the right amount for a long walk, interminable times in a waiting room or a quick research visit to the library. 5 Stars Used Ipod Shuffle
I know everyone has been benefitting form the convenience and ease of these little shuffles for years now but I just joined the club and I love it. I clip it on to run and have the joy of music during my workout with my hands empty. Easy to load music, plenty of memory to hold more than enough songs for multiple runs.

2 Stars Went bust after 2 months
Not very happy with my Shuffle purchase. The Shuffle stopped working after 2 months, pretty frustrating. The headphones are fine but the battery won’t hold a charge. Have had a few other iPods with good experience but not this time.

I love this little iPod. It’s so small I can put it anywhere. I do have a problem getting any headphones to stay connected to it though. I have to hold them in or I keep getting interrupted music. I thought it was only the original ones that came with it but the second pair I bought are doing the same thing.
