1 Star Worked fine, for a short while
I bought this charger for my iPhone about 3 months ago. It worked fine for charging my iPhone in the car, though the cord was so short as to make it impossible to talk on the phone while it charged. Now, however, it will only work if the connector is inserted into the phone at an angle and propped up, a position pretty much impossible to maintain in a moving car.

I still need to charge my phone in the car occasionally so I plan to replace this unit with a higher quality product.

Works great! The short coiled cord is nice because it is only takes up a small area instead of the cord getting tangled everywhere.

4 Stars Perfect for me, but not for everyone…
I use this to charge my iPhone 3G. I had a regular PowerJolt (non SE) before this and the USB cable that came with the original PowerJolt quit working within a week causing me to have to use another USB cable paired with it. Then the USB connection began to get tempermental so I purchased this NEWER and IMPROVED design. So far so good as this unit is an all-in-one-piece design.

Pro’s:

All-in-one piece should make it more reliable (and has been thus far).

Shorter than the old plug-in plus USB adapter (I hated having the long USB cable in my car as I always had to push the cable around.

Illuminated ring around the plug-in lets you know when the phone is charging properly.

Con’s:

Some may have liked the flexibility of always having a USB cable in the car with them (Personally I would rather pack one seperately as you would need a wall/plug-in adapter paired with it anyway unless you wanted to charge via PC).

I wish the connection would “lock” into the iPhone like the old iPod connections did (where you had to push the buttons on the side to “release” the charger). This is a small caveat but would be appreciated. With this short cord its easy to disconnect the iPhone on accident when shifting the phone around.

This is exactly what I wanted: short and compact. Yes, the cord is short, but that’s OK with me, the plug is compact, doesn’t stick out too much. The materials quality seems fine. I normally had good luck with Griffin products. I’m using it with 3GS.

It worked great, the reception was great, and then I used it for about 15 minutes, and I heard a loud *pop*, and light smoke started coming out of the device. It still seems to work, but I don’t know for how much longer, and it’s not worth damaging the phone. Fast shipping, but if this item cost more (paid $13.12 incl shipping) I would have tried to return it.

The item is good. It works well and it does what it claims. It keeps the ipod in place and you can listen to your music in the car through an FM station. The drawback is that in my car if I place the charger in the lighter opening, the gear lever pushes the holder. There is not enough space for both. So check if you have enough space in your car before buying.

Very disappointed. A worthless product. The inserts make the dock unusable. Even without the inserts you need to remove any case or skin for either an iPod or iPhone. This is ridiculous; Griffin must know that many, many people use cases and skins. Even without the case the connections are not strong. I would never recommend this product. I was ripped off.

I just received my Griffin PowerDock 4 today, and already need to return it.

Pros: Compact design. Recharging adapter built into base, so no need for bulky adapter at outlet end. Makes for easy portability. Light weight.

Cons: Perhaps I got a “lemon”, but the unit I received immediately had power supply/charging issues when I tried to charge our 2 iPhones. When a single iPhone was placed in a docking bay, it appeared to charge properly for about 5 minutes, then the phone would vibrate, beep (as if being connected to a USB cable and then disconnected–similar to the description in Charles Willson’s Amazon Review for same product), screen would turn on and off, and error message would appear saying that the legacy device was incompatible for charging the iPhone…then about 15 seconds later, it would appear to be charging again. When 2 iPhones were placed simultaneously in both front docking bays, the beeps and error messages occurred more frequently…as if the power supply of the device was insufficient to charge both iPhones at the same time.

I requested an exchange for a replacement unit from Amazon…we’ll see if the next one has the same issues….

1 Star Good idea. Not so good execution
Purchased this product for our 4 iPhone family.

I had read about the charging problems and had hoped that they were resolved. They weren’t. With 4 iPhones in this unit, they sporadically lose the charging status and cycle with a “beep”. At 2 in the morning, it’s not what you want. This problem alone was a show-stopper.

Even if this problem were resolved, I agree with other reviewers about lack of external USB ports to charge devices other than Apple products. Same with the lack of indicator light to display charging status. With “iffy” connections using the dock adapters, you can’t tell the phones are charging without pressing the iPhone button in each… a little like the 1960′s game “Operation” because the phones are so close to each other front to back.

Finally. due to size and weight of the unit, in my opinion, this is not for travel use.

Ultimately returned the product and happily substituted the lenmar 4 USB portable charger at less than half the price, a fraction of the weight and with more flexibility.

Hope this help others.

Overall a great way to charge multiple IPODS or IPOHNE, though the IPOD 3GS at times does produce an error that it is not a compatible charging device. Would be nice to be able to order additional adapters at a cost that is not so expensive. While at $1.99 not bad, the shipping brings the cost to almost $8.

2 Stars Only too bad you cannot sync from this
Looks and feels nice, but has some notable shortcomings as product:

- There is no USB connector for connecting this to a computer. You cannot sync from this; it is only–as advertised–a charging station.

- The AC power cable they give you to plug it in is only 3.5 feet long, meaning you’d better have this very near an outlet or extension cord. At least it’s not a “wall wart”.

- The package includes only one of each type of plastic adapter fitting. The good news is, you probably don’t need to use them in all cases. They seem to server more as guides for plugging devices in than as structural supports.

If you just need a charger, this will do the trick–it’s not all bad. I would, however, think you’d want to keep looking/waiting for a dock station that also lets you sync.

I bought this for my 16 year old for Christmas ’08. I did a lot of research before choosing this product. The research paid. It is easy to use once you familiarize yourself with its bells and whistles. The speaker system is loud, yet not too loud. It is compact and easy to pack up and go. If I had had my Ipod at the time I would have purchased one for myself. I am looking at the newer model for myself. If the price does not go down soon I will be purchasing this one. Both my son and I are very pleased with this product.

Bought this in Aug 08.I did alot of research before buying this product when i did.I was forced to buy this cause my Phillips 256mb PSS stopped working when the battery in it died after 2-3 years (POS..most phillips products are over time)!!The battery was not worth replacing considering this product was only double the cost.

I enjoy listening to music in places u normally wouldn’t without a vehicle around so this product is good for that.Even though it’s not even close to as portable as my old Phillips PSS (4-5 times size/weight) which can fit in ur pocket..the Altec Lansing IM600 produces alot more sound cause of the bigger speakers and sounds better so i prefer it.

Most Ipods can fit on it which means alot more music than my previous boombox.The lithium ion battery is an awsome thing to have compared to having to buy batteries all the time like most portable systems out there on the market.Just wish they could make it last a little longer like 10-12 hours at higher volumes instead of 6-8 cause i like my music loud most of the time.If u don’t change the volume much the battery will last ALOT longer..

Only other gripe would be I love waking up to music and the only way u can do this with the Altec Lansing is by leaving it plugged in and ON along with ur ipod charging.When i feel they could make it to where,when the IPOD alarm turns on the IPOD,it turns on the Altec Lansing…

Haven’t had any problems so far but that’s expected with the good reviews it has received and i’ve only owned it for 10 months.I would definitely recommend this product and the only reason i didn’t give it five stars were the gripes i had with the battery life at high volumes and no automatic turn on for alarm feature on Ipod when being off.

3 Stars Happy, but confused
This is a wonderfully slender machine, with excellent full sound, with

one odd flaw. I get great sound from the radio and when I plug in an

iPod through auxiliary, but only get sound through the left speaker when I use the iPod dock. And I’ve tried three of them (iPods). Sadly, when I spoke to Altec I got one of those responses that makes my blood run cold; “That’s not an issue we’ve ever heard of before.” Otherwise it charges quickly, runs for a long time and is all that is advertised.

I have owned this for less than two years, used it maybe 5 times and now it has stopped working. Doesn’t charge and plays only for about 20 minutes. Could it be the rechargeable battery? I have tried a couple different charges. That is not the problem. Anyone know where I can get one of these…I am very disppointed. Anyone know who I can contact?

I like it for playing my itunes songs. The sound is great once you find an empty station. It works well to charge the phone. The cord is very short and doesn’t have much ‘spring’ to it. I mean it is very short!!!! I can’t have it plugged in and look for my favorite song on the phone.

I bought this device to both charge the iPhone and play music through the radio. You MUST find a blank frequency or the background station will likely distort your music. Even on a clear frequency, the highs are slightly clipped. The cord is coiled but only reaches about 2 ft. This barely makes it to the front seat where I lay the device and wants to pull it off the seat. Make sure your lighter socket is fairly close to where you want to locate the device. Selecting a frequency is straight forward as well as the on/off button. The connector locks into the device and you must squeeze the tabs on the side of the connector to release it. Overall, not bad – gets the job done.

I’m pretty new to the Ipod world, so I don’t have much of a basis for comparison. However, this product has met my needs for a device that would play my Ipod through the car’s stereo system while recharging the battery.

In researching for a car adapter, I saw that many people said that you should avoid an FM transmitter and go with a device that uses the AUX outlet (if you have one). Of course an AUX outlet doesn’t recharge the Ipod battery so you’d have to go with a separate battery charger and adapter combo. Another advantage of an FM transmitter is that you can use it in a more basic car without an AUX outlet.

At first the transmitter picked up a lot of static from the recommended frequency. I could see how someone living in a metro area (and I live in the suburbs of the NY tristate area) could have trouble finding a static free frequency. Luckily I was able to find a better frequency and the sound for the most part has been quite good. However, I still occasionally have to reset the frequency when traveling a distance and there are some (thankfully small) zones where there’s always a bit of static.

Otherwise, I’m very happy with this product.

Works great with Ipod. Signal strength was also excellent. Just plug it in to your car and listen to your own tunes! I am very satisfied with the product, and would recommmend it.

Compared with Monster’s iCarplay, this transmitter is really inferior. The bass quality is lacking and the static interference is very noticeable. The iCarplay is pricer, but you get a lot better product.

A couple of reviewers have mentioned not being able to use the musicPower Duet with Creative Zen players and Motorola Razr cellphones and made the incorrect assumption that this was some kind of a defect in the adapter. The PowerLine musicPower Duet has two “standard” USB power ports which are 5V at 500ma each. A couple of reviewers have misread the rating label on the unit and thought that the outputs were 1.5V and 2.5V. In fact, the ratings for the two outputs are:

Vout 1: 5V … 500mA

Vout 2: 5V … 500mA

Unfortunately, Creative and Motorola chose to use “non-standard” USB power configurations for their products and that is the reason they can only be charged using the Creative or Motorola proprietary adapters.

1 Star Poor grounding in the electronics
I bought this adapter for my car’s iPod audio kit when I upgraded to the iPod Touch 2G (apple removed the 12V firewire charging in this as well as the latest nano and iPhone). Apparently they didn’t feel the need to properly ground the 12V to 5V circuit and it created serious ground loop interference; basically a high pitched tone in all the audio from the iPod through the car radio while using this adapter. There are some other reviews that complain about the same issue.

Some devices may be more tolerant of the poor grounding but I wasn’t so lucky. Eliminating the interference with a ground loop isolator is a pretty simple fix for standard RCA or 1/8″ jacks, but with a proprietary cable and connector it’s a bit more daunting. Not including something so basic in a product designed to convert the charge, in my opinion, is just cheap and negligent.

I wouldn’t buy a Scosche product again.

5 Stars Works on BMW Z4
Bought a 4th Gen Nano to replace stolen unit. The new Nano was fully controllable by Apple/BMW interface but would not charge. Also seemed to run down really fast. Imagine my dissapointment while driving through the North Gerogia Mountains and suddenly my music stops only to be replaced by whatever it was on the local FM station. Nothing to drown out the banjos. Called Apple-they seemed clueless, the Tech did not seem aware of the problem, or that Apple even supplied interfaces to BMW. Don’t think he gets out much. He put me on hold until the connection was lost. Went to a BMW chat site and read the recommendation for this device. Ordered it and it works fine. No longer get the no-charging message and it is fully controllable from my radio. It is large-but it stays in the glovebox when I remove the Ipod. Not happy with Apple for this poor design and lack of customer support.

4 Stars Working with iPhone 3Gs and Harman Kardon D&P
I see people are having mixed results using this device. Mine arrived today and is working well with my iPhone 3Gs and Harman Kardon Drive and Play 1. Prior to getting the adapter music would play but the phone would not charge. Now the music plays and the phone charges like a champ.

Other than the lack of catches to keep it from falling out I have no complaints.

I purchased this at the Apple Retail Store, and I was told that it would work with my Griffin FM Transmitter in my car. I had done research on-line; including ilounge. The reviews were good. Well it did not. It did not even charge when connected to an Apple USB sink cable. I’m glad that I purchased it at a retail store so that I could return it without mailing it back to Amazon. Not happy!

While it causes the Nano 4G to be positioned somewhat awkwardly, it works fine with both these devices. This is in contrast to the device designed specifically to work as a home-based docking station, which I have read is incompatible with the iHome. If you are OK with having your Nano without strong physical support, this adaptor does what it is intended to.

5 Stars Simple to the point. Cuts down on travel clutter.
This does exactly what I wanted it to. Replace two (or more) chargers with one for travel. Most everything charges off USB these days. Now all I have to bring is adapter cables for iPod, cell, etc. and leave the chargers behind. I especially like the fact that the AC plug folds into the unit making packing cleaner. Includes charge only versions of iPod and mini USB cords.

I bought this to charge all our iPods, iTouch, and iPhones during our trip to Europe. This was the only charging device I brought along, and it worked great. 120v, 220v no problem. Don’t hesitate, I still use today. It allows charging of two devices at the same time. Blue light is bright but doesn’t bother me.

1 Star Might be one to avoid..
I bought this charger a little while ago. It came in the mail just as described in the packaging and all. I proceeded to use the charger and did so for a couple days. However, on or about the 4th day I went to plug the charger in to my iPhone. I did so and as soon as I did I heard the sounds of electricity. I looked down at the wall and saw the charger short curcuiting, sparks shooting out and it even produced a couple flames. I immediately ripped the charger out of the wall and disposed of it. Suffice to say the charger was faulty and it was a complete loss. Now, I might have just recieved a faulty one, but I would say buyer beware of these cheap chargers, they might cause more damage than they’re worth.

2 Stars Yeah, it charges, but…
I’ve had problems using my iPod touch while it was plugged in. If it’s not plugged in to the iPod all the way, and even sometimes if it is, it interferes with the touch screen. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to the iPod.

Also, the LED indicator light is very bright, so not good for putting next to your bed. It also heats up a great deal.

So it charges, but no telling if there is any long term damage being done to the battery.

1. The power connector always gets loose as soon as I turn even a slight corner. I tried all ways to fix it and finally bought a double outlet adapter and plugged that between the device and the car. That helped a bit, but still, a corner – a short power outage. A better designed plug or a possibility to stabilize the plug assembly would help very much.

2. The only frequency, I could get it to work acceptably, was 107.3. Since the unit powers on by default to 88.1, I had to turn the holder, so I can see the display, adjust the frequency to 107.3, turn the holder back – ouch- again a short power loss due to turning the plug and back we are where we started: at 88.1 – that alone makes the device unusable. The device should switch on with the last used frequency. Then, that problem would not exist at all.

3. I have an iPhone 3Gs, so I planned to use the hands free option. But, as soon as I plug in the small connector cable between the iPhone and the transmitter, the sound gets very hissed, the volume is reduced to a whisper and … guess what: the sound of the phone call is so weak that neither me nor the called person could understand one word. We tried it also the other way around: getting called in the car – same result. That makes the phone option completely useless. I tried also without connecting the “phone cable” and using a bluetooth headset for the phone part. Bad idea: as soon as you switch over to Phone mode, i.e. you are answering a call or dialing, the transmitter seems to get switched off and the radio starts hissing with static electricity.

Summary: Once I got lucky and had been successful with tuning the transmitter in to 107.3, the sound quality was surprisingly great. However, as soon as the phone cable gets connected, the sound quality becomes unacceptable. Aside from that, the device has two major downfalls: unreliable powerconnector and the default frequency. If you are lucky and 88.1 is a good frequency for you, and you do not plan to use your iPhone for phone calls, you might be able to use it. In all other cases it is a waste of money. With just a few slight improvements (i.e. more reliable power connection and defaulting the frequency on power on to the last used frequency), the device would be very usable for listening to music. Still, the phone part needs a bit more rework.

the holder is okay, could be a lot sturdier. it would often slip out and turn off. but it holds.

transmitter is hard to select the channel because you can’t hold down the button to reach a new a station quickly, and also returns to the default channel. i dont know if there is a way to make it stay on the same one each time you turn on the car, but i dont think you can. not sure though.

transmitter also is not the best. average sound. average product. there are better fm transmitters that cost $50+, so for it being only $20, you get for you pay for.

It’s cool. The sound effect is just like local FM radio. And even with holder, just [...] I strongly recommend it.

2 Stars I wanted to like it, but…
I have been looking for a FM transmitter for the iPhone 3GS for a while now. This one seemed like a good one. When it did work, it sounded great. The phone transmitting through the car speakers isn’t as strong as the music playing, but it seemed to work. The main problem is that the transmitter kept blowing out fuses. I thought it might be just my car, so I tried it in my wife’s car, and the same thing happened. After going through 3 fuses in a couple of hours, I figured it just wasn’t worth it and sent the unit back.

Good: Easy installation. Inexpensive.

Bad: This device WON’T give clear CD quality sounds as some reviewer claimed, and will give low background static noises. You will always hear annoying static noises that you won’t enjoy listening to your ipod music. It is also made of cheap plastic material.

I don’t recommend this product to anyone.
